Dear friends, today we will tell you the story of one of the most enigmatic women of the Silver Age – Zinaida Nikolaevna Gippius (1869–1945). She was called the "white devil of St. Petersburg." Alexander Blok was timid before her. Ivan Bunin argued with her. Her house on Liteiny Prospekt was the center of Russian culture in the early 20th century. She lived with her husband, the writer Dmitry Merezhkovsky, for 52 years, almost never separating. Together, they survived two revolutions, fled starving Petrograd, became stars of Russian Paris – and together, at the end of their lives, made a mistake for which they were condemned for decades. We have strived to separate popular myths and legends from confirmed facts. Where sources differ or information remains controversial, we will honestly inform the viewer. Some of the dialogue and scenes in the video are artistic reconstructions based on the memoirs of contemporaries, letters, and diary entries. This was done to bring the story to life, but we have tried to avoid attributing words and actions to the characters that are not supported by documents.
