Two days before his car was found at Craig Pass on the Continental Divide — at 8,262 feet, no trails nearby, no gear in the vehicle — he called a high school friend named Matsue Evans in Guam at 3:30 in the morning and spoke to her for two hours. They rarely spoke by phone. She said later — now I know he's missing, why would he call me two days before something happened? His car was found unlocked with keys inside.
