Every Book Says Keep the Good Knight Why Did Capablanca Trade It Away? Capablanca chess endings 49
Look at the position after move 19. Capablanca's edge is almost nothing — a rook on an open file, a queen on a good diagonal, and a two-for-one pawn majority on the wing. Golombek called the game that follows "a bright and flawless gem." Chernev called it the art of squeezing the utmost out of a tiny advantage. By the end, a pawn that began the game on b6 walks up the board and becomes a queen. This is the cleanest passed-pawn lesson in the whole book, taught in two halves: how to CREATE a passed pawn, and how to USE one. Get this, and you stop wasting winning endgames. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Create the passer — advance a pawn majority and win the lone enemy pawn so your runner has no counterpart (24...Na3! / 25...Qxa4) Seize the only open file, and improve your worst-placed piece first (19...Rc6) Trade for the lasting advantage — an active knight beats the bishop pair (20...Nc3!) Use the passer — push it, and when it's blocked, don't stall: remove the blockader (28...b4! / 30...Rc2!) This is Plan 2 of the two endgame plans, run end to end. Every idea is cross-referenced to the manuals — Smirnov's An Endgame Expert (creating and using passed pawns), Nunn's Chess Endings (passed pawns, the blockade, bishop vs knight), and Nimzowitsch's My System (the blockade). Section-level references throughout; the full citations are in the free PDF below. And one honest note: I'll validate Capablanca's technique move by move with the engine — because here, the books and the machine agree. This is Capablanca at his most precise. FREE EPISODE NOTES (PDF) I've written this whole method up move by move — create then use, both halves, the manual references with page numbers, and the key diagrams — in a free PDF made just for this video.
