Playing dozens of boards at once with seconds per move, Capablanca handed an old friend a lesson in the one piece amateurs leave in the corner — the king. This is Game 40 of Capablanca's Best Chess Endings, and the doctrine is the most fundamental idea in all of endgame play: in the endgame the king stops hiding and becomes a fighting piece — often the decisive one. Capablanca demonstrates the very first lesson of his own book, Chess Fundamentals: he walks his king to the centre on move 13 ("perfectly safe, and beautifully placed for the ending"), trades down into a king-and-pawn ending his better structure has already won, marches the king to the key squares, and finishes with a single spare tempo that leaves Black in zugzwang. He does it in a simultaneous display, as a teaching gift to his lifelong friend Walter Penn Shipley — the "Dean of American Chess." Read the position before you read the moves. ♟️ Bring the King Out Early (13.Ke2) — in the endgame the king belongs in the centre, not the corner. Capablanca plays the first lesson of his own textbook, and the ending arrives "with frightening rapidity." ♟️ Trade Into the Won Pawn Ending (20.Rb3! ... 23.Rxb8) — with the better pawn structure (four islands against three), exchange the pieces. Don't keep them on when the king-and-pawn ending is already winning. ♟️ March to the Key Square (24.Kd3 ... 33.Kf5) — the king penetrates to the squares from which it wins the pawns. Opposition and key squares decide king-and-pawn endings; the king that arrives first usually wins. ♟️ Win With a Reserve Tempo (34.c4!) — one spare pawn move locks the position and puts Black in zugzwang. In a pawn ending, whoever runs out of moves first loses. This is not a tactical fireworks game. It's a clinic in king-and-pawn endgame principles — opposition, key squares, zugzwang — taught by the man who wrote the textbook on them. It's also a validation episode: the master game matches Chernev move-for-move, and the technique is independently taught by GM Igor Smirnov, who uses this exact game in his own course.
