Hakata's summer tradition, the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, celebrates its 785th anniversary this year. On July 1st, magnificent "Kazariyama" (decorative floats) exceeding 10 meters in height are erected throughout the city, instantly transforming Hakata into a "Yamakasa mode." The climax is undoubtedly the "Oiyama" (chase of the Yamakasa) on July 15th. The "Kakiyama" (portable floats), weighing a ton each, are swiftly carried into the sacred path of Kushida Shrine, the guardian shrine of Hakata, and circled before bursting out into the city at dawn. KBC Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting has been broadcasting the charm of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa for over 60 years, since its first nationwide broadcast of the Oiyama in 1960 (Showa 35), the year after its television station opened.
