Das brutale Ende der Linearbandkeramik

Around 7,000 years ago, the Linear Pottery culture flourished from Ukraine to France. But then the unthinkable happened: A seemingly peaceful era descended into a process of disintegration marked by brutal interpersonal violence. What led to the downfall of this era? In this episode of FUNDSTELLE (Discovery Site), we delve deep beneath the surface of the northern Weinviertel region. In Asparn an der Zaya – more precisely in Schletz – excavations on farmer Daniel's fields revealed a gruesome discovery: Over 100 slain skeletons at the base of a large defensive structure – evidence of the first known massacre in human history. How could a culture that had successfully practiced agriculture, animal husbandry, and long-distance trade (including obsidian and spondylus shells) for over 500 years collapse so suddenly? New analyses of prehistoric pottery paint a fascinating picture: Increasing societal polarization, the emergence of hostile subgroups, and a changing climate brought the system to a fatal internal tipping point. We compare the discoveries from Schletz with similar dramatic sites in Germany, such as Kilianstädten and Herxheim.
