The 10th SS Panzer Division "Frundsberg" arrived on the Eastern Front in April 1944—and in its very first battle, it did something Stalin hadn't expected. Near Buchach, together with its twin division, "Hohenstaufen," it broke through the Soviet encirclement and opened an escape route for 200,000 soldiers of the 1st Panzer Army. The pocket that would become a second Stalingrad was emptied within days. Moscow was incredulous: where had Hitler gotten a new panzer division, about which Soviet intelligence knew almost nothing? Then came the hell of Hill 112 in Normandy, where "Frundsberg" halted the British offensive, the Nijmegen Bridge during Operation Market Garden, the Pomeranian Operation "Sonnenwende," and the final battles on the Oder-Neisse. The division fought on every front of the crumbling Reich—transferred to places where the situation was already hopeless. And finally—a bitter irony of fate. In April 1945, exactly one year after Buczacz, Frundsberg found itself alone in the Spremberg Pocket. Without fuel, without ammunition, without hope of relief. Its commander, Heinz Harmel, refused to obey a suicidal order and led the remnants of his men out of the encirclement—for which Berlin removed him from command three weeks before the end of the war. This is the story of a division that rescued others from encirclement—and that no one came to rescue.
