The 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen" was formed in 1943 as part of the Waffen-SS and, in just a few months, traversed some of the bloodiest fronts in the final period of World War II. It fought in Ukraine, Normandy, near Arnhem, in the Ardennes, and in Hungary, suffering enormous losses in men and equipment. In this film, we will trace its journey from the first battles on the Eastern Front, through the desperate clashes with the Allies in Normandy, to the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. It was the "Hohenstaufen" men who found themselves in the city area during Operation Market Garden and played a crucial role in stopping British paratroopers attempting to hold the Rhine Bridge. We will also see how the division was rebuilt repeatedly, despite increasing shortages of fuel, tanks, and trained soldiers. Its final battles took place during the German operations in Hungary and the retreat towards Austria, where in May 1945 the remnants of the unit surrendered to American forces.
