Approximately 10 million people in Germany suffer from incontinence. But who can you confide in? Who should you talk to about it? This situation is so uncomfortable that many sufferers often keep their suffering to themselves out of shame. It's embarrassing not to be able to control your bodily functions, to wet yourself as an adult, and then to have to admit it. However, incontinence has nothing to do with a lack of hygiene or neglect. Those affected are simply unable to control the release of urine or stool. The finely tuned system of bladder muscles, sphincter muscles, pelvic floor muscles, and the controlling nerves and centers in the brain and spinal cord no longer functions properly. Incontinence can have many causes! In an interview with Kerstin Lüking, a mother of seven, midwife, and herself affected by incontinence, we learn more about her thoughts and how she copes with this challenge. How strong is her sense of shame?
