MiG-21bis | latający kałasznikow
If someone asked me what the most common automatic rifle in the world is, I would answer without hesitation – the Kalashnikov automatic. And just as the Kalashnikov was the symbol of Cold War-era small arms, the MiG-21 became the symbol of Cold War-era fighter aircraft. This aircraft was developed in numerous variants and versions, was used in many countries around the world, and many still fly this type of aircraft. One of the last versions of the MiG-21 was the bis version, which I would like to discuss today. I should also emphasize upfront that I will not focus on the use of this version of aircraft in Poland, as that is a topic for a separate discussion. Furthermore, I have noticed that discussing the times when the Polish Air Force operated hundreds of combat aircraft is very disturbing to some, and then there are all sorts of strange stories with materials on this topic. But these are minor stage directions that should not obscure the main topic of our meeting, which is the MiG-21bis. The creation of this variant is directly linked to plans to create further variants of the MiG-21 with improved performance. At this time, development work was also underway on the Su-15. At this time, Soviet military authorities ordered the Soyuz Design Bureau in Ufa to develop a jet engine, designated R25-300, with improved performance over existing engines. Thus, the MiG-21bis was born, the final production modification of the popular MiG-21. Production of the bis variant began at the Gorky plant in 1971. In addition to the new turbofan engine, the aircraft also received an improved fuel system. The aircraft could also carry an additional fuel tank, which compensated for the reduced range resulting from the new engine's increased fuel consumption. The new engine was more powerful than its predecessor while retaining its dimensions, though it was slightly heavier, weighing 1,215 kg. However, it turned out that the new engine had significantly better performance than initially expected. Under these conditions, the aircraft's speed increased by 1.6 times.
