Se Dio veder tu vuoi: First published: Unknown Description: The lyrics are a patchwork of excerpts from Metastasio's works. The odd stanzas come from the oratorio Betulia liberata, set by many composers, including Jommelli, Salieri and the young Mozart. The even stanzas come from La Passione di Gesù Cristo. According to the tradition, this melody was composed by st. Alphonsus. It existed a refrain too ("Te solo adoro, "If you want to see God, look at him in every object; Look for it in your chest, you will find it with you. Everywhere I look around, Immense God, I see you, I admire you in your works, I recognize you in me. And if where he dwells You still did not understand, Confuse me, if you can; Tell me, where he is not. The earth, the sea, the spheres speak of your power; You are for everything, and we all live in you." Quanno nascette Ninno: First published: 1816 Description: The origin of this carol is uncertain. According to the tradition, it was composed in 1754 under the title Per la nascita di Gesù by st. Alphonsus in Deliceto, in the province of Foggia. Two different melodies are associated to this text: the better known is very close to Tu scendi dalle stelle. It is the only Italian song included in The Oxford Book of Carols. "When the Infant Jesus was born in Bethlehem, It was night but it looked like noon. Never the stars - so brilliant and beautiful, Were so visible: The most sparkling Went to summon the Wise Men in the East. Quickly the birds awoke Singing in a completely new way. Even the crickets - with their screeches And hopping here and there; He is born, he is born, they said, the God who made us all. There were no enemies on earth: The sheep pastured with the lion, The leopard - was seen Playing with the kid, The bear with the calf And the wolf with the lamb were in peace. So, the World was messed up, The sky, the earth, the sea, all the people. Who was sleeping - kept feeling his heart beating wildly in his chest for the happiness; and peace and jollity sounded in the air. The Shepherds were watching their sheep And an angel, more resplendent than the sun, Appeared - and told them: Don’t be afraid, no; Happiness and laughter, Earth has become Paradise. In the dark today is born in Bethlehem The awaited Savior of the World. You will found him in swaddling clothes, You can - never mistake, Wrapped, And in a manger laid." Tu scendi dalle stelle: First published: 1755 Description: The poem was published in a 1755 collection of spiritual works by St. Alphonsus under the title Canzoncina a Gesù Bambino. It seems that it was composed in 1754 in Nola, near Naples. The melody comes from the oral tradition and it is attributable to st. Alphonsus himself. "You descend from the stars, o King of Heaven And come in a cave, with cold and chill O my divine Child, I see you here shivering. O blessed God How much costed you to love me! You, the Creator of the World, Miss dresses and fire, my Lord. Dearest elected Child, How this poverty Makes me love you more, Because Love made you poor for us."
