Ships at Sea: An 18th-century music box
Dreaming of faraway places? Missing your love? This film might offer some consolation, 18th-century style: made about 1786-87 in Paris, this snuffbox’s theme is bittersweet. An automaton moves two tiny silver ships across a golden horizon, while in the foreground couples say goodbye. This beautiful piece features in the newly re-opened Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Galleries, showcasing highlights from one of the most important collections of decorative art ever given to the nation.
