Transatlantic Cruise Stop: Ponta Delgada | 3 Ways to Explore This Port repositioning cruise

If you're sailing on a transatlantic cruise, there’s a good chance your ship will stop in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. Major cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Virgin Voyages, Cunard Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Line frequently include this island on transatlantic and repositioning itineraries. But once your ship docks in Ponta Delgada, what should you actually do? In this video, I’ll show you 3 great ways to explore São Miguel during your cruise stop — whether you want to stay close to the port or explore the island’s dramatic volcanic landscapes. 3 Ways to Explore São Miguel from Your Cruise Stop 1️⃣ Stay in Ponta Delgada (Walk from the Ship) If you want a relaxing day, you can explore the city easily on foot. Start at the famous Portas da Cidade, the iconic city gates located right in the historic center. From there, wander through the town and make your way to Jardim António Borges, a beautiful botanical garden filled with tropical plants, lava rock formations, and quiet walking paths. While you’re in town, try some Azorean specialties like: • Limpets • Local Azorean cheese • Fresh Atlantic seafood This option is perfect if you want a laid-back day close to the cruise port. 2️⃣ West Coast – Sete Cidades & Volcanic Coast One of the most famous sights in the Azores is Sete Cidades, where two stunning lakes sit inside a massive volcanic crater. From the viewpoints above, you’ll see the famous twin lakes — one blue and one green. Many tours also stop at Mosteiros, where volcanic rock formations rise from the ocean and black-sand beaches stretch along the coast. This side of the island is dramatic, rugged, and one of the most photographed landscapes in the Azores. 3️⃣ East Coast – Tea Plantations, Furnas & Hot Springs The east side of São Miguel offers an incredible mix of nature, geothermal activity, and unique food. Many tours stop at the island’s famous tea plantations: • Gorreana Tea Plantation – the oldest tea plantation in Europe, where you can walk through the tea fields and see the factory. • Chá Porto Formoso – a scenic tea estate with incredible coastal views. From there, you’ll head toward Furnas, one of the island’s geothermal hotspots. Many visitors stop at Terra Nostra Gardens to relax in the famous thermal pool surrounded by lush botanical gardens. While in Furnas, try the traditional dish Cozido das Furnas, which is cooked underground using volcanic heat. You can also walk through the bubbling geothermal fields, see the steaming vents, and even taste the naturally heated mineral spring water. 🌎 Three Ways to Have an Epic Cruise Stop Whether you choose to: ✔ Stay in Ponta Delgada ✔ Explore the dramatic Sete Cidades crater lakes ✔ Or discover tea plantations, Furnas hot springs, and geothermal landscapes São Miguel is one of the most unforgettable stops on a transatlantic cruise. 🧭 Tours Mentioned Private Tours East Coast (Tea Plantations + Furnas): 👉 https://www.viator.com/tours/Sao-Migu...
