Gap Peak Hike Zia Tahir May 15, 2026
May 15, 2026 Gap Peak Hike 9.5 km | 1161 m elevation gain What a wildly humbling and unforgettable adventure. I was questioning every step during the brutal scree climb, but the moment I made it back to the parking lot, the whole experience transformed into one of those hikes you can’t stop thinking about. Gap Peak truly lives up to its reputation—challenging, fierce, and absolutely memorable. Every report I read beforehand was spot on. This hike isn’t especially technical or exposed, but it is a serious leg burner from start to finish. It demands grit, patience, and a steady mindset—and that’s exactly what makes the summit feel so rewarding. The weather forecast kept shifting between morning and afternoon rain right up until the last minute, but we decided to go for it anyway—and I’m so glad we did. The trail begins in the trees with a steep, relentless climb before opening into a beautiful alpine meadow where the first cliff band comes into view. From there, the route becomes an adventure of its own: Remember right from the first cliffband, go straight up then left from the second cliffband. This section involves hugging cliff walls, pushing straight uphill through muddy and slippery terrain, and at the end arriving at the section that defines this hike—the endless scree ascent. It was gritty, exhausting, and mentally demanding, but every step felt like part of an unforgettable mountain test. From the col, the route continues over a light scramble and onto a ridge that plays with your emotions in the most dramatic way possible. False summits seem to appear endlessly, each one daring you to keep going, but the payoff is extraordinary. The ridge is broad and manageable, and when the true summit finally reveals itself, the views are nothing short of spectacular. We were even hit with a brief snow and wind storm on the way back, which only made the day feel even more epic. Overall, this was a stunning, strenuous, and deeply satisfying hike—one that pushes you hard but rewards you with incredible views and an even greater sense of accomplishment. If there’s a way to avoid some of the scree on the ascent, I’d love to try it next time. Has anyone taken the alternate routes marked on AllTrails? I’d love to hear your experience, if you have.
