WEST MARKHAM: Bassetlaw Parish #38 of 66

If you’re a wealthy Royal and you’re able to do so, you’re probably going to want to have a final resting place that’s rather grand aren’t you? I mean, there’s nothing wrong with having a grave that looks, shall we say, “normal”, but with the ability to have something much bigger, I’d imagine you’re not going to say no. Step forward into the limelight then, today’s parish which features a place that has just that, built for the wife of the Duke of Newcastle. That building is the Milton Mausoleum, which wasn’t even intended to be that at first. The main village we’re looking at here has a church which has been here since the 12th century, and was supposed to be demolished. However, it was never torn down despite the Mausoleum being constructed initially as a brand new parish church in order to replace it. It would last as such until 1949 when it was decided the original church was to once again become the parish church, leaving the “new” one redundant. It’s now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, and rightly so. What else can I tell you about this one? Well it has a cricket club that’s…not in the parish (work that one out!) and a specialist seafood restaurant along the Great North Road. You’ll also find an old school here, and the remains of some earthworks from a long since deserted medieval version of this village. Quite a lot to tell for a parish of only 170 people then.
