Truman and First Lady Bess Truman return home from Key West to receive the key to the newly renovated White House. March 27, 1952. – Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner. Truman speaks of not running for re-election. March 29, 1952. – Public opinion interviews with people on the street about Truman's decision not to run. – “Truman Addresses Congress on State of Union.” In attendance is Prime Minister Winston Churchill. January 9, 1952. – “Free World Hails U.N.’s 6th Birthday." U.N. Headquarters in NY issues stamps. President Truman greets Korean United Nation’s soldiers in D.C. Secretary of State Dean Acheson speaks about deterring a third world war. October 24, 1951. – Paris, France. A new session of the General Assembly opens. French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman passes key to the Palais de Chaillot to Trygve Lie, Secretary-General of the United Nations. – “Mr. Truman Shows the White House.” President Truman leads a televised tour of the newly renovated White House, showing the Blue Room and the pianos in the East Room. May 3, 1952. – “Dewey Visits President Truman in the White House.” New York Governor Thomas Dewey speaks with President Truman in the White House after returning from a trip to the Far East. September 13, 1951. – “Barkley Honored on 38th Year in Congress.” President Truman presents Vice President Alben Barkley with a gavel made from wood from the White House to honor his long career in Congress. – “U.S. Greets Queen Juliana.” Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands visit the United States. President and Mrs. Truman greet them at the airport and they motorcade through Washington, D.C. They are the first guests to stay in the White House after the renovation. April 2, 1952. – “Truman Flies Over Ohio Floods.” President Truman views the flooding of the Ohio River from the air. January 31, 1952. This series of newsreels was produced by Warner Pathe.
