More than six million people in Germany require long-term care. The majority are over 75, but children and young people also receive benefits from the statutory long-term care insurance. Long-term care is a topic many are reluctant to think about. What must it be like to care for one's own parents or to be bedridden oneself? Questions that people prefer to ignore. And there's another problem entirely: the financial strain on long-term care insurance is growing ever larger as more and more people receive benefits. This trend will intensify due to the aging population. At the same time, significantly more caregivers will retire in the coming years than new ones will enter the profession. Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) now wants to address at least the financial problem with a reform. Her proposals, which have already been made public, have received much criticism, but also support, including from the Council of Economic Experts. In this episode, Anne Will speaks with Christine Vogler about possible solutions. The president of the German Nursing Council worked as a caregiver herself for many years and heads the largest training institution for healthcare professions in Germany. Anne Will asks her why she believes the reform is misguided, what alternative solutions exist, and what optimal care that puts the individual at the center would look like.
