41.8 degrees Celsius – it's never been hotter in Germany. In the summer of 2026, the country experienced a veritable heat emergency: highways buckled, the bitumen on tram tracks melted, and emergency rooms overflowed. According to the Robert Koch Institute, more than 5,100 people died from the heat around the last weekend of June alone. And the federal government's reaction? Reluctant to nonexistent. The climate crisis and heat problems are, at least explicitly, not being made a top priority. But where does this ignorance in climate policy lead? At the memorial service five years after the Ahr Valley flood – a catastrophe that also wouldn't have occurred without the climate crisis – Chancellor Friedrich Merz promised not to abandon the people. But what does that mean when you look at the government's climate policy, the reversals on the "heating law" and the phasing out of combustion engines, or the misappropriation of funds from the Climate and Transformation Fund?
