【侍タイムスリッパー】主演・山口馬木也が語った大ヒットへの戸惑い（インタビュー前編）

An Aizu samurai living in the late Edo period travels back in time to Japan 140 years in the future and wakes up in a period drama studio! "Samurai Time Slipper," now in theaters, depicts a real samurai, bewildered by the vastly different scenery, but finding a new life as an actor playing a role in a slasher in modern-day Japan. Directed by Junichi Yasuda, a hard-working indie filmmaker who has independently produced "A Gun and a Fried Egg" (2014) and "Rice" (2017). With just a little over ¥7,000 in the bank when the film was completed, it began with a single screening at Cinema Rosa in Ikebukuro, and is now showing in 230 theaters. It's already a hotly anticipated release, with 306 theaters already confirmed. We spoke with Makiya Yamaguchi, star of this film, which is reminiscent of the success of "One Cut of the Dead" (2017). ————Congratulations on the huge success. Yamaguchi: Thank you. ————This is your first starring role, right? Yamaguchi: Yes. It's my first starring role. ————The number of theaters showing the film is steadily increasing and it's continuing its successful run. How do you feel now? Yamaguchi: I can only describe it as a miracle. I never imagined it would happen, so I can't even begin to comprehend it. I feel like a parent when it comes to this film, and I'm amazed that such a genius was born! He was just born the other day, but he's already standing and walking, running with incredible speed, and has even won awards at overseas film festivals. He's moving so fast that I'm like, "Wait a minute!" (laughs) The director and I often laugh about this. ————When did you realize it was a hit? Yamaguchi: It was during the stage greeting. There was applause after the credits, and when I stood on stage, everyone was looking at me with beaming smiles. They said, "I've seen it five times," "I've seen it seven times," and some even said, "I've seen it 14 times." At the time, there had only been 14 screenings, so they had seen every single one.
