Moreover, they attempted to defect with their entire troops, leading to a massive firefight. The defection of two frontline battalions was a tremendous loss and a disgrace for the South Korean military. At the time, a battalion commander was equivalent to a modern-day regimental commander, and both defectors were graduates of the Korea Military Academy. The fledgling Republic of Korea, less than a year after the establishment of its government, was plunged into shock, and the Chief of Staff of the Army was even replaced to take responsibility for the situation.
