Para war hero: "A rocket-propelled grenade took off my arm."

Born and raised in South Africa, Jaco van Gass had a dream – to leave his homeland and serve in the British Army. But after joining the Parachute Regiment that dream turned into a nightmare when he was hit by a Taliban-fired Rocket Propelled Grenade while on operations in Afghanistan. He lost his left arm above the elbow and suffered significant damage to his left leg too. With his Army career over, Jaco refused to let his disability define his life and has since become a World class cyclist, winning two gold medals for Great Britain at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. Military charities have played a significant role in Jaco’s recovery – something he explains in this short film. *If you’d like to help heroes like Jaco, you can do so by playing the Veterans’ Lottery.
