The state of Rio Grande do Norte is experiencing a double setback in public safety which, combined, paints an alarming picture: the state registered the highest growth in intentional violent deaths in the country in 2025, with a 19.6% increase, according to the 20th Brazilian Yearbook of Public Security, and it is also the Brazilian state that solves the fewest homicide crimes, with only 9% of cases resulting in charges being filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office, according to the study "Diagnosis of Homicide Investigation in Brazil," by the Sou da Paz Institute. The two surveys, although independent, reveal facets of the same structural problem. While Brazil as a whole reduced intentional violent deaths by 8.2% in the last year, Rio Grande do Norte went against the trend, skyrocketing in the negative statistics and standing out among only seven states that showed an increase (Rio Grande do Norte, Rondônia, Acre, Roraima, Federal District, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Rio de Janeiro). At the same time, the state ranks last nationally in its capacity to investigate and hold criminals accountable for murders, even behind states historically associated with violence, such as Bahia (14%), Piauí and Rio de Janeiro (23%), and Ceará (27%). At the opposite end of the ranking are Goiás (86%) and the Federal District (81%), which appear as national benchmarks.
