Puri - with the Kriya Yoga Ashram founded by Sri Yukteswar, India 1977

Kriya Yoga became known worldwide through the book Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. The Ashram (meditation center), from where Yogananda began his journey to the West, is situated in Puri, India.   Yogananda's autobiography aroused Horst Heigl’s interest, and he traveled to India in 1973 to visit the ashram. At that time it was headed by Swami Hariharananda Giri, a realized monk who was particularly impressive by his loving nature and devotion. Horst was warmly welcomed and received his first initiation in Kriya Yoga from the Swami. Some visits and initiations later, in 1977, he recorded the life of the Ashram and also Puri with its beautiful surroundings on the Bengal Gulf with a Super 8 camera.   Swami Hariharananda first came to the West in 1974.
