In his younger days, he was a baggage lifter (a thief) until Sathya Sai Baba told him to stop and open the Sri Ranga Patna orphanage. He bought land on the banks of the river Cauvery and started the orphanage with four children in 1965. Halagappa says that in 1965 Sai Baba visited the ashram to see and guide the activities here while on his way to Kodaikanal. Sathya Sai Baba continued to regularly stop at this ashram to speak and give darshan to Halagappa and his family members until 1985. A small temple or shrine is part of the orphanage, it contains many photographs of Sai Baba covered with materialized vibhuti. The temple also has in its possession some amulets (with portraits of Sathya Sai Baba and Shirdi Sai Baba) which were blessed by Sathya Sai Baba more than 30 years ago. When the amulets are held, amritha continuously flows from them. Amritha is sacred honey nectar or ambrosia that is also known as amrita and amrit, it is Sathya Sai Baba’s holy substance that has a distinctive taste and odour. The amulets are for all to hold and see. There is also carved in black stone on a pedestal, feet representing those of Shirdi Baba’s which exude a particularly fragrant amrit. These symbolic feet were installed there on Sai Baba’s directions by N. Kasturi in the 1960s. Amrit is the ‘nectar of the gods,’ which in the ancient Ramayana gave eternal life to those who were fortunate enough to taste it. Those who did not succeed were consigned to more lifetimes as demonic asuras. It is also considered to be symbolic of the subtle liquid secreted by the pituitary gland of yogic adepts which is said to confer immortality.
