The chapter "The Complexification of Genomes" is part of the theme 1 "The Earth, Life, and the Organization of Living Things" from the final year of biology and earth sciences program. Knowledge and skills covered in this chapter, according to the official bulletin (official program) 📖: The universality of DNA and the uniqueness of its structure in the living world allow for genetic exchanges between organisms that are not necessarily related. Exchanges of genetic material, outside of sexual reproduction, constitute horizontal transfers. They occur through various processes (viral vectors, bacterial conjugation, etc.). Horizontal transfers are very common and have very significant effects on the evolution of populations and ecosystems. Human health practices are affected (spread of antibiotic resistance). Endosymbioses transmitted between generations, common in the history of eukaryotes, play an important role in their evolution. The genome of a cell (bacteria or eukaryote) integrated into a host cell regresses over the generations, with some of its genes being transferred into the host's nucleus. This process is at the origin of mitochondria and chloroplasts, organelles containing DNA. Fundamental concepts: horizontal versus vertical gene transfer, endosymbiosis, cytoplasmic inheritance, phylogenies.
