After crossing the Kii Peninsula, I decided to try running it vertically. That's how my journey across the Kii Peninsula began. Last time, I ran to Shirahama, retracing my memories from 25 years ago, but this time I'm heading further south. I'll pass Hiki, Ikogi, Susami, and head to Kushimoto. With Hashigui-iwa rocks in my sight, I'll aim for Taiji, Katsuura, and Shingu. As I drive along National Route 42, strangely, memories from 25 years ago keep coming back to me. Some scenery has changed, while others remain the same as they were back then. And this time, there was one place I absolutely wanted to cross. That's the Kumano Ohashi Bridge over the Kumano River. This bridge, which has watched over this land for so many years, is scheduled to end its service in 2026, passing the baton to a new bridge. I wanted to cross this bridge, which I also crossed 25 years ago, once more before it's gone. After crossing the bridge, we headed to Nakagori-ten, a famous shaved ice shop in Shingu. We ordered the "Jabara Kintoki," made with locally produced jabara citrus. It was surprisingly mild shaved ice that didn't give us a brain freeze. Our "eat, sleep, run" journey continues.
