La gesta de la Guardia Civil y el maquis: las víctimas olvidadas (Parte IV)

In previous articles on the Civil Guard and the Maquis, we described the origins, development, and how tenacity and skillful strategy would put an end to the violence of the armed gangs. Along with this, crucial factors were the confluence of factors such as reduced sentences for the liaisons, offers to commute death sentences, and the emotional impact on the guerrillas of not only realizing that many of their own had betrayed them but had been abandoned by their own leaders. Furthermore, although it may be uncomfortable to recall, the truth is that Franco's regime enjoyed a large social base. Coming from turbulent times, it valued the peace and security of the regime even while renouncing political freedom. All of this, coupled with the cruelty of the Maquis' crimes, would ultimately undermine the scant cooperation of a society that was no longer afraid to denounce them.
