Intercropping Maize and Sorghum: How to Succeed In the ever-changing world of agriculture, sustainability and efficiency are playing an increasingly important role. One method that is gaining importance in this context is intercropping maize with other crops. This practice, promoted by the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) through the requirement of "Good Agricultural and Environmental Status" (GAEC 7), offers numerous advantages, from improved soil health to increased biodiversity and yield stability. Why Intercropping? The main motivation for introducing intercropping is the requirement for crop rotation and crop diversification, which will become mandatory from 2024. This regulation aims to avoid monocultures and promote sustainability in agriculture by introducing different crops each year. Intercropping maize with other crops is an effective strategy to meet these requirements by maintaining soil fertility, naturally controlling pests and diseases, and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers. Maize-Sorghum Mixture: A Model for Success. Good results are achieved with a mixture of maize and sorghum. This combination is very easy to manage and offers very stable yields. In intercropping, sorghum with maize offers greater crop security, especially in dry regions. If sorghum and maize are sown in two passes, the advantages clearly outweigh the extra work! In the first pass, the maize is sown with conventional row spacing and a normal seeding rate of approximately 8-8.5 seeds/m² using a proven maize drill with starter fertilizer. One or two days later, the sorghum is sown using a standard seed drill with a row spacing of 12.5–25 cm (at 25 cm, only every other row is opened). This method allows the maize crop to receive targeted starter fertilizer, giving it a good start. The closer row spacing of the sorghum reduces competition from the maize and results in significantly faster soil shading and row closure. The wider distribution of the plants allows for more efficient use of nutrients and water reserves, better weed suppression, and improved preservation of soil structure. In more expensive, pelleted maize-sorghum mixtures, the significantly smaller sorghum kernels are coated with a lime-clay mixture, making them larger than the maize seed. This allows for better application with a maize drill and largely prevents segregation. However, the sorghum plants then partially deprive the maize of its starter fertilizer. Furthermore, there is a significant risk that if the sorghum plants are sown at a uniform depth, they will not have sufficient vigor to germinate. This poses a much greater risk that the stand will not contain enough sorghum to be recognized as a mixed crop. Additionally, pelleted seed is currently only available in limited quantities and is still in the testing phase. As a companion crop to maize, sorghum-type grasses such as the varieties Suzy or Manila are used. These can keep pace with maize in terms of height growth and therefore reduce the risk of stunted growth due to insufficient light. In this mixture, maize ensures high total dry matter yields and remains the dominant source of starch and energy. Sorghum provides yield stability and, with its high sugar content, contributes to better ensilability.
