Reddish-purple cornfield? What's the cause? What can be done? In some regions of Germany, the corn plants are showing an unsightly reddish-purple hue. In this interview, Ansgar Holtmann and Gerd Heuser discuss what to do when the plants are discolored and why this is happening. My name is Juli, and I work here in sales at Holtmann Seeds. Today we're talking about discolored corn and what can help. Corn with nutrient deficiencies? Sulfur helps! Ansgar Holtmann: I'm here again with our colleague Gerd, and today we want to talk about the situation with the corn. How is it growing right now? If you look at the corn crops at the moment, it's June 18, 2024, the corn is already at, let's say, the 6- to 8-leaf stage. In some cases, if it was planted very late, it's just barely peeking out of the ground. How do you currently perceive the crops as you drive through the fields? Gerd Heuser: The crops are indeed very different in their development. What's striking, however, is that the wet soils have likely led to a lack of oxygen in the soil. The nutrient supply is good, the corn plants are standing, but the nutrient conversion within the plants is still somewhat lacking. Ansgar Holtmann: How exactly do you see that? Does it have something to do with plant height or color? Gerd Heuser: Well, the plant height and development are very sluggish, but the color change from yellow to red is clearly visible. Ansgar Holtmann: And what can I do if, as a farmer, I see that my crop seems to have a problem? What would you recommend? Gerd Heuser: The nutrient supply is adequate; the problem is the nutrient conversion within the plant. So we need to push ahead with implementation, and one way to do that would be to apply sulfur foliar spray. It works relatively quickly and, above all, promotes nitrogen conversion in the plant. Ansgar Holtmann: A suitable product from our shop would be, for example, Sulfur HS 800. Could we use that? Gerd Heuser: Yes, absolutely. The sulfur is absorbed through the leaves and works very, very quickly. You can see significant differences in the plant's development after seven to ten days.
