Freedom Weighs Almost Nothing with Esther Adán
Esther Adán’s transformation from a conventional life in Spain to a full-time nomadic journey across four continents by motorcycle began in 2023 at age 56. After her children left home and her marriage ended, Esther found herself questioning the structure of the life she had built for decades. Profoundly deaf, she went on to earn her motorcycle license and set off alone through the mountains of northern Thailand just weeks later, eventually riding more than 50,000 kilometers through Southeast Asia, South America, and beyond. From Vietnam’s mountain roads and Colombia’s infamous Trampolín de la Muerte to Patagonia, Easter Island, and the Arctic landscapes of Norway, her travels on the road became about confronting uncertainty, fear, and reinvention later in life. But long before the motorcycle, Esther was already drawn toward humanitarian work and cultural connection. She spent months volunteering at an orphanage in Rajasthan, lived alongside Maasai widows in Kenya, and participated in a humanitarian convoy into Ukraine. During her travels through Vietnam, a chance visit to a school for deaf children led to an international hearing aid campaign supported by the global motorcycle community, eventually bringing Esther back to personally deliver hearing aids to the students herself. Esther’s story offers a perspective on resilience, independence, and the unexpected ways adventure can create connection across cultures and communities. Born in Seville, Spain, Esther Adán is a former teacher, businesswoman, and mother who has been living as a full-time nomad since 2023. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she documents her travels and humanitarian experiences through writing, photography, and video while continuing her motorcycle journey across South America. Her presentation combines storytelling, photography, and firsthand reflections from the road. www.adventurersclub.org
