Pinot Noir is a fairly old grape variety with a long history. Its cultivation began around the 1st century AD, and its roots are in Burgundy. Pinot Noir is considered the oldest wine grape in Europe. Throughout its history, Pinot Noir has mutated several times. First, it mutated into Pinot Gris, resulting in berries with lighter, dark pink skin. Pinot Gris, in turn, mutated into the lighter Pinot Blanc. Besides these natural mutations, Pinot Noir has a rather interesting hybrid called Pinotage. It was developed in the early 20th century and became the hallmark of South African winemaking. Today, Burgundy remains one of the leaders in Pinot Noir production. Its main producers are concentrated in the Côte d'Or subregion. Besides Burgundy, this variety is also grown in Languedoc, where the wines produced there are less complex and sophisticated, but their price is much more affordable. Pinot Noir is also widely grown in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the USA, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina.
