Spanish Grape Varieties: Tempranillo Today I want to tell you about the most popular Spanish grape variety, Tempranillo. And there's a reason for it – Tempranillo Day – it's celebrated every second Thursday in November. Let's start with the name, which comes from the Spanish word "tempranino," meaning early. The berries of this variety ripen earlier than others, by about 2-3 weeks. However, everything depends on the location and climate. Tempranillo is the flagship grape of the Iberian Peninsula. The total area planted with Tempranillo worldwide exceeds 232,000 hectares, of which approximately 202,000 are in Spain. It is most widely grown in Rioja, where 75% of vineyards are planted with this variety. Here, it is used to make single-varietal wines, as well as the famous "Rioja blend" – with Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo. Relatively close to Rioja is the Ribera del Duero region, where Tempranillo also thrives. Here, it fully realizes its potential, allowing for the production of rich, premium wines. This variety is also grown in Navarra, Toro, Castile and Lyon, Valdepeñas, La Mancha, and other Spanish regions.
