The 99 arguably cemented that reputation in the late 1970s and despite a shaky start with questionable reliability from the Triumph engine, the later SAAB 2-litre lump, hot Turbo model and remarkable rally success soon put the 99 on the map and made it a Swedish alternative to Mercedes or Audi.
