12 Dead in Mass Shooting as Government Loses Control of Criminal Cartels

After 12 people were murdered by heavily armed gunmen in the Jumper informal settlement in Cleveland, Gauteng, the official response focused on condemning the violence. But according to residents, this was not just another random act of murder. This appears to be linked to illegal mining, turf wars, and the growing shadow economy that is slowly turning parts of South Africa into a mafia state. In this video, I discuss the Cleveland massacre, the rise of illegal mining syndicates, South Africa’s expanding criminal economy, and the horrifying possibility that criminal cartels are becoming more powerful while the state becomes weaker, more corrupt, and less capable of protecting ordinary people. South Africa already suffers from extreme murder rates, corruption scandals, police failures, and political decay. But when organised criminal groups become powerful enough to launch armed attacks in communities without fear, the country enters an entirely different and far more dangerous phase. Is South Africa becoming a cartel state? Is the ANC government capable of stopping this? Or has the corruption inside the state already made it impossible to fight the criminals outside of it?
