U. P. Michigan Gogebic Iron Range | Mine Ruins | Graves of Killed Miners | Miner Murals
Join me for a journey deep into the history of Michigan's Upper Peninsula as I explore the Newport Mine site in Ironwood - once one of the most important and dangerous mines on the Gogebic Iron Range. This video uncovers the stories left behind in the forests, foundations, and murals of the historic mining community. I start with a brief history of iron mining in the U.P. and the Gobegic Iron Range. Then I'll explore the remains of the Newport Iron Mine. I'll also explore the ruins and remains of other mining related buildings including an old school. an administrative building, and machine shop for the mine. I'll travel to the Newport Hill historical marker, sharing the background of the mind, its years in operation, its incredible depth, and the many immigrant families who came here seeking work. From there, I visit a cemetery where the many miners who died underground are laid to rest. Their graves tell the story of the harsh realities of early mining life and the sacrifices made by the Finnish, Italian, Polish, German, and other immigrant workers who built the town of Ironwood. Finally I'll head into town to see two large murals dedicated to Gogebic range miners - powerful tributes to the men who shaped the region through courage, hardship, and determination. #upperpeninsula #ironmining #uphistory #abandonedmichigan #abandonedplaces #mininghistory #ghosttown #cemetery
