Two Towns One Shore Two Endings | Forgotten Along the Upper Peninsula Lake Michigan Shore
Along the shores of Lake Michigan in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, two very different communities once stood facing one another across the Sturgeon River. In this video, I explore the history of Sandtown, a Native American community that once existed along the sandy shoreline, and the company town of Nahma, built around one of the Upper Peninsula's largest lumber operations. I visit Indian Point Cemetery, where many Sandtown residents are buried, and the Nahma Town Cemetary, sharing the stories of some of the people laid to rest there. These cemeteries hold quiet evidence of lives shaped by the land, the water, and the industries that once dominated this shoreline. This video also looks at the rise and decline of Nahma as a lumber town - how it was built, how it thrived, and how, after the timber was exhausted, the entire town was put up for sale, and sold to an outside company whose development plans were never realized. I walk the present-day marina, once the site of the lumber mill and docks, and trace where the railroad tracks ran as they carried lumber from the mill to waiting ships. What remains today is a peaceful waterfront - but the history beneath it tells a much deeper story. This is a story about two communities, two very different paths, and what happens when industry moves on - but people, memory and place remain. Error The author of the book on Sandtown is Clearing Sky Woman. I erroneously referred to her in the video as “Laughing Sky Woman.” I am so sorry! In the video you will see a grave with a spirit house which is a cultural practice of Native Americans.
