The Refugee Who Built A Massive Transport Empire— The Peter Abeles Story

Welcome to Big Truck Time! 🚛 In 1949 a 25-year-old Hungarian refugee arrived in Sydney with almost nothing. He had survived a Nazi work camp, fled communism twice and crossed the world to start again. Within 30 years he had built the second largest transport empire on earth. 55,000 employees. 180 countries. Road, rail, sea and air. He owned an airline with Rupert Murdoch. He advised prime ministers. Almost nobody under 50 knows his name. Peter Emil Herbert Abeles was born in Vienna in 1924 into a Hungarian-Jewish family. When the Nazis invaded Hungary in March 1944 he was 20 years old and sent to a forced labour camp. His family fled to Romania. Miraculously they all survived. Post-war Hungary fell to the communists — the family forced to flee again. In a Bucharest music hall he met Claire Dan, a young actress. They married in 1947. In late 1949 they boarded a ship for Sydney, sponsored by the Australian Jewish Welfare Society. His first job — selling encyclopedias and clothing door to door, learning English one sale at a time. In 1951 he befriended George Rockey — a fellow Hungarian immigrant. They pooled their savings and bought two second-hand trucks. Named them Samson and Delilah. Registered a company called Alltrans. Their first contract — hauling ore and cement to Broken Hill across roads that would destroy lesser equipment. Abeles had calculated that transport costs made up approximately 7% of the total price of most goods in Australia. In a country where distance was a high cost tyranny there was enormous opportunity for someone willing to build the right network. Within five years the fleet had grown to 50 trucks. By 1960 — 200 vehicles. By 1967 — approximately 500 lorries across Australia. That same year Alltrans merged with Thomas National Transport. TNT-Alltrans. One of Australia's first truly national freight operations. In 1968 Abeles became managing director. 1972 — knighted for services to commerce and the arts. Sir Peter Abeles. The refugee who had arrived selling encyclopedias was now one of Australia's most recognised business figures. The knighthood brought immediate controversy — journalist David Hickie alleged it was tied to a transfer of TNT shares to NSW Premier Robert Askin. A parliamentary inquiry found no conclusive evidence. The transaction had taken place after the honour was announced. The controversy lingered. The finding stood. Through the 1970s TNT expanded to the United States, Canada, Britain, Brazil and New Zealand. By the mid-1980s — 180 countries, 55,000 employees, the second biggest transport empire in the world. 1979 — Abeles signed an agreement with Rupert Murdoch's News Limited to take over Ansett Transport Industries. Australia's second-largest airline — jointly managed by Abeles and Murdoch until 1992. Between 1982 and 1992 Abeles ran both TNT and Ansett simultaneously. From 1984 he sat on the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia. In November 1988 he was one of only a handful of witnesses to the Kirribilli Agreement — the private handshake between Bob Hawke and Paul Keating about the future of the prime ministership. Hawke later called Abeles a father figure. The controversies were serious. Alleged connections to Sydney crime boss Abe Saffron. Alleged involvement with the Nugan Hand Bank money laundering investigation. Admitted business discussions with US Mafia associate Jimmy Fratianno. No charges were ever brought. The AFP's own report concluded the payments were legal corporate fees. Fratianno himself told investigators Abeles did not know he was dealing with organised crime. 1992 — TNT's aggressive European expansion had left the company debt-ridden. Losses mounted. In September 1992 Abeles retired as managing director. Two months later he resigned from Ansett. In 1996 News Limited sold its Ansett stake to Air New Zealand. Ansett collapsed entirely in September 2001 — 16,000 jobs lost. Peter Abeles died of cancer in Sydney on 25 June 1999 aged 75. Bob Hawke delivered the eulogy — "Of the 5.5 million immigrants and more than half a million refugees who have made Australia their home since World War II, none can match the breadth and magnitude of Sir Peter Abeles' business achievement." Two trucks named Samson and Delilah. 180 countries. 55,000 employees. Then gone.
