The Rise and Fall of IPEC — Australia's Forgotten Freight Giant

Welcome to Big Truck Time! 🚛 Before Toll. Before Linfox. One company held Australia's supply chain together — and then vanished almost overnight. Founded in Melbourne on 12 February 1957, Interstate Parcel Express — IPEC — built one of the most powerful freight networks in Australian history. At its peak, 22,000 pallets moved through its depots every single day, connecting Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and beyond with a reliability that retailers and manufacturers had never seen before. But in late 1988, TNT struck a $78 million deal to absorb the company. Within 90 days, every truck was repainted. Every depot sign came down. By March 1990, the IPEC name was struck from the register entirely. 450 workers made redundant. 300 drivers walked away. A culture built over three decades — erased with a memo. This is the full story of IPEC Transport. From three signatures in a Melbourne office to 22,000 pallets a day — and how it all collapsed.
