How much can we trust the "early Islamic rock inscription" photos circulating on social media? How similar are the photos shared today to the rock inscription that pilgrims were taken to Medina to visit 90 years ago and which was said to have been written under the Prophet's direct supervision? That inscription included the Prophet's statement, "I am Muhammad, son of Abdullah," along with the names of companions like Abu Bakr, Omar, and Ali, but that inscription is nowhere to be found today! In this video, I start with the strongest and most official example of this: the Zuhayr Inscription, presented by Saudi Arabia as "the oldest known Arabic rock inscription of Islam," which was registered with UNESCO's Memory of the World. Comparing the 2017 version of the inscription from internet archives with its current state reveals a surprising truth: a three-line inscription on the rock has been officially removed from the photograph by the institution.
