Long-term commitments of billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine indicate that geopolitical fault lines in Europe will be deliberately kept active for many years to come. The most shocking and critically read section of the communiqué from a geopolitical perspective is the direct inclusion of Iran's nuclear capabilities and the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz within NATO's legitimate sphere of intervention. This strategic step means that the risks of local conflicts in the Middle East can instantly transform into a potential international crisis. While NATO's new security umbrella shakes the balance of power in the region, it also brings vital risks for Turkey, which is geographically located in the middle of a firestorm and borders Iran.
