PINOCCHIO: he murdered the cricket that tried to save him

In the autumn of 1881, in the Giornale per i Bambini —Italy's first children's newspaper—, Carlo Collodi hanged Pinocchio from an oak tree and ended the story. The puppet died. That was the ending. This is not a literary analysis, but a reconstruction of what Collodi actually wrote: the cricket crushed with one hammer blow, the Blue Fairy introduced as the corpse of a girl, the children sold to the Sicilian sulphur mines, and a happy ending imposed by his editor. What you know as a story about honesty was, at its origin, a manual for teaching children to obey. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📍 CHAPTERS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 0:00 — The real children behind Pinocchio 2:07 — The reconstruction: Collodi, Florence, 1881 4:01 — The dead cricket and the original ending 6:42 — Pleasure Island: joy as punishment 9:27 — The Italy that needed this tale 11:59 — The dead girl and the final trap 15:40 — The punishment that looks like freedom 16:47 — The nose was never the point ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📚 HISTORICAL SOURCES ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ · Carlo Collodi — La storia di un burattino, Giornale per i Bambini, 1881–1883 · Coppino Law (no. 3961) — Kingdom of Italy, 15 July 1877 · Census of the Kingdom of Italy, 1881 — 62% illiteracy · Ministero di Agricoltura, Industria e Commercio — inspections of the Sicilian sulphur mines, c. 1880 · Booker T.
