THE LION KING: Disney stole it from Vikings, not Shakespeare
The Gesta Danorum (c. 1185) by the Danish cleric Saxo Grammaticus contains the version Disney erased: the child Amleth feigns idiocy for years before burning his uncles alive inside the banquet hall. This is not film analysis. It is the historical reconstruction of three centuries of censorship applied to the same story: Saxo (1185), Shakespeare (1600), Disney (1994), Sundiata Keita (Kirina, 1235), Rwanda 1994. What you know as a musical about giraffes was, at its origin, a Viking saga about who took what was mine. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📍 CHAPTERS 0:00 – The story that was told three times 1:38 – What was erased each time it was told 2:25 – Amleth: the 13th-century Viking avenger 4:58 – Shakespeare: what the Renaissance erased 7:09 – Disney: the final erasure 9:24 – Africa: the ideological backdrop 11:04 – The hyenas: Whoopi Goldberg and the racial code 13:07 – June 1994: the date no one mentions 14:11 – Sundiata: the African story Disney ignored 16:08 – The pattern in every story about power 17:33 – Closing ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📚 HISTORICAL SOURCES · Saxo Grammaticus — Gesta Danorum (c. 1185–1208), Book III — Royal Library of Copenhagen · William Shakespeare — Hamlet (1600–1601), early quarto editions · Eleanor Prosser — Hamlet and Revenge (Stanford UP, 1967), political analysis of the play · Henry A.
