BobBlast 334 - "Mixed Media Answers! Part Two"
BobBlast issue 334 Mixed Media Answers! Part Two Welcome back to another BobBlast! This BobBlast is Part Two of Mixed Media! In Part One, I showed some of the materials I normally use for creating mixed media works. In Part Two I will do a demo with those materials - and show how I use them! The end results are shown on my back wall: • 30x40 inch canvas •Landscape dyptych - two related mixed media work to create a single piece •Series of Women - celebrating the "Year of the Woman" These paintings are all representative of the different series, or bodies of work I have going on in my studio. My demo starts with a blank sheet of 300 lb watercolor paper, cut to 20x20 inches. Gesso and let dry. My first step is to spread acrylic gel medium over the entire surface of the paper. Then I began to freely layer collage paper - torn pieces, not cut. Everything appears random at the start! After I layer the collage paper, I spread additional gel medium on top of the entire surface to "seal" it all down. I use a brayer to squeeze out the excess gel and eliminate air bubbles, if you want… and while your mixed media piece is not dried, you can still paint acrylic paint on top of it. Acrylic (gel medium) sticks to acrylic (paint). The final step is to apply a coat of clear, acrylic varnish. Then… sign it! Mix it all up! Interested in playing with collage shapes in your paintings?
