On November 22, 2023, shortly after 6:00 a.m., the Cologne police were alerted to a situation on Börnerstrasse by the partner of a 56-year-old man. According to the current state of the investigation, he had just threatened her with suicide, armed himself with a knife, and announced his intention to detonate the propane gas cylinder in their apartment. She fled the apartment, and he barricaded himself inside the second-floor apartment of the multi-family building. The police cordoned off the street.
