Fundamentos del Capitalismo: El Emprendedor en la Ciencia Económica | Martín Krause

Why has the figure of the entrepreneur been virtually erased from modern economics textbooks? In this brilliant lecture held at Francisco Marroquín University, Argentine economist and historian Martín Krause analyzes the elusive history of the entrepreneurial role within economic theory and its fundamental impact on the development of free societies. Through a historical overview, Krause examines how early French economists (such as Richard Cantillon and Jean-Baptiste Say) placed the entrepreneur at the center of their analysis due to their ability to handle uncertainty. However, he explains how the English classical school paved the way for the labor theory of value, which Karl Marx would later use as the basis of his critique, and how the subsequent neoclassical mathematical model of Léon Walras ultimately erased the entrepreneur by assuming a utopian world of "general equilibrium" and perfect knowledge. In contrast to these approaches, Professor Krause highlights Ronald Coase's fundamental contributions on the nature of the firm and transaction costs, as well as the analysis of the Austrian School (Mises, Hayek, Schumpeter, Knight, and Kirzner), where the entrepreneur is seen as the driving force of the market through economic calculation, vigilance, and creative destruction. Finally, the lecture transcends theory to analyze the problems of crony capitalism (mercantilism), the stifling impact of the regulatory state (reviewing data from the Doing Business index), and the influence of cultural variables analyzed by sociologist Geert Hofstede when comparing the realities of countries like Guatemala, the United States, and Sweden. This is an essential lesson for understanding why values, corporate culture, and institutions are the true key to the wealth of nations.
