In the first half of our journey through the abandoned villages of Taga Town, Shiga Prefecture, we travel along rugged mountain roads to three hamlets: Sugi, Hozuki, and Gosō. These were once settlements where charcoal burning was the main occupation. Now, shrouded in silence, the houses are returning to nature. As we imagine what life was like in these places, which are isolated by deep snow in winter, please enjoy the scenery of Shiga, imbued with history and melancholy.
