The Bizarre Case of the Circleville Letters #circleville

Beginning in 1977 i(and not stopping until late in the 80s) people in the town of Circleville in Ohio began receiving letters making claims against a number of residents but specifically against bus driver Mary Gillispie who the writer claimed was having an affair with school superintendent Gordon Massie, something she denied. With obscenities and threats to her and her husband and the Massie and to many others, the town was in turmoil. It got so bad that Mary's husband went out with a gun saying he knew who the writer was and crashed into a tree on the way, killing himself (although some believe he was murdered). Then, Mary, while driving her bus, saw a sign on the side of the road with obscenities about her daughter. She got out and ripped the sign down but discovered it was attached to a box with a gun in it set to shoot her. The gun belonged to brother-in-law Paul Freshour. He was arrested and his wife, Karen Sue, said she saw letters in his house and that he indeed was the Circleville Letter Writer. Freshour spent the next ten years of his life in prison for attempted murder claiming he was innocent of the charge. In the long run, he was not proven to be the writer of the letters, dozens of which came WHILE he was incarcerated.
