Exploring Beautiful Sicily By Train: Unforgettable Valley of Temples

Welcome on board our 12 day rail tour of Sicily. In this video Gail and I take an Italian Regionale train from Palermo, through the heart of Sicily to the city of Agrigento. From there it's a brief 10 minute bus ride to the amazing Valley of Temple. It's a bit of a misnomer because the temple is actually on a ridge. And what a ridge to spend a day in the glorious Sicilian sun exploring this highly significant outpost of ancient Greek civilization. Walls and temples date back to the 5th century BC (or BCE—Before Common Era—as it is now known). Classical Greek architecture comes to life here, in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. There's the evocative Temple of Guinone, the near complete Temple of Concordia—the best preserved temple outside of Greece. The colossal stone giants, known as telemons, lying on their backs along side the thoroughly ruined Temple to Olympian Zeus that they once adorned. Just a few examples of why a day trip to the Valley of Temples is so worth the pleasant train journey through the Sicilian countryside. We recommend taking the Line 2/ bus from the plaza in front of the station, or nearby Piazza Rosselli, to the east entrance of the Valley of Temples at the Temple of Guinone. From there you can walk through the park, exit at Porta V (Gate 5) and take the Line 1 bus back to the Agrigento train station.
