Exploring Beautiful Sicily By Train: Footloose in Taormina

Welcome on board our 12 day rail tour of Sicily. It took but a brief Regionale train ride from Catania to deliver us to the world famous hillside town of Taormina. And when we say hillside we mean the train arrives near sea level in the nearby village of Giardino and, from there, it's a 4 kilometre bus ride up and up and up the the centre of Taormina. Nearby is the haut shopping street of Corso Umberto, loaded with high end shops catering in part to a long list of celebrities that vacation in this sun drenched village. To be sure, it's fun to promenade up and down this main street, as we do in the video. But there's also one of the most atmospheric of Classical Greek theatres dating back to the third century...B.C! And, for us, a highlight is most certainly the Sentiero dei Saraceni, an hour long hike that hugs the slopes, taking us even higher to the quaint village of Castelmola. And our reward? We dipped into a regional speciality, Brioche con Gelato, a local take on the ice cream sandwich but here served as a sweet bun filled with the always superb Italian gelato.
