Captain and Assistant Engineer Jonathan Brackbill walks us through this versatile unit, which was designed with Pierce's PUC system in mind to serve as the "Swiss Army Knife" of the department. As a volunteer fire company, Ridge needed a truck that could handle multiple tasks while remaining simple enough for any member to operate. Jonathan shares how the company is navigating the shift from traditional hydraulic tools to battery-powered solutions with a hybrid approach. The truck is equipped with two built-in hydraulic pumps, allowing pre-connected tools to operate from any side. Additionally, they’ve invested in a battery-powered backpack, combining the portability and quick response of battery tools with the reliability and strength of hydraulic systems. This innovative setup ensures they are prepared for a wide range of rescue scenarios. We also explore the Autochock, a stabilizing system with a unique spring or strut design that automatically adjusts to shifting loads. It’s a simple yet highly effective tool for improving efficiency during operations.
